MELOMANE:
A word in
French that does not have an English translation? A rare species? A unique
experience? Mélomane: person who loves music with passion; person who cannot detach herself from music, who lives music, who needs music to live, who knows music, ...a "musophile" or "musicophile"? The mélomane is an individualist, a rational listener who is an integral part of the performance of the music [is there music without listeners? The musician too is listening!] , who experiences personal/individual musical taste. The mélomane focuses on the musical experience per se through the invisible equipment: the equipment is not at issue [we do not say "the equipment is not an issue", but it is "not at issue"]. The mélomane wants to enter the performance and be washed over by the emotion. A "mélomane" is not the same as an audiophile. If the mélomane is concerned by the music, the audiophile is concerned by the equipment, for the pleasure of listening produced by the equipment. The audiophile wants to listen to the different sounds created by the electrons flowing through silver or copper, vacuum or silicon! The audiophile is attempting the perfect [absolute?] sound with the equipment. The mélomane wants to achieve the absolute musical experience through the equipment. If an audiophile is probably analytic, a mélomane is probably romantic. Are you an audiophile or a mélomane? There is a continuum here, and anyone may decide where she/he stands in respect to these two, possibly opposite [ying/yang] characteristics. We here at tecon audio audio look at is this way: who is to say that the audiophile is not also a music lover. Or the mélomane not an equipment fan? tecon audio and the audiophile: the "mean" to the soundscapes, where the performance takes place. tecon audio and the mélomane: the performance, as "allowed" by the soundscape. ---------- Any reproduction is, by its very nature [and by definition], different from the original, this being the nature of all music reproduction. The key point is to remain “true” to the original, to offer a pristine space where the original can be reproduced in all its glory. We call it “pristine soundscape” because we attempt to make it as pure as possible. The audio reproduction becomes an art form "in action" [as pointed-out by David Robinson of Positive Feedback OnLine in a meeting of the LA & OC Audio Society]. We say "hear better": a pristine soundcsape will let the music come through in its integrity and purity. We
say "listen more": the joy of a pure musical experience will lead
you to an attentive listening, to be more of the archetypal mélomane,
the reflective, rational, active listener at the heart of the musical
experience. After reflecting about these issues, the question changes somewhat: are you more of an audiophile or of a mélomane? Tell us what you think!
Pristine: pure, unspoiled, completely devoid of contamination, uncorrupted, unaltered. Soundscapes: acoustic environment, environment created by sound.

high note is not the only thing! -Placido
