How to select loudspeakers! If you think there are a great number of amplifiers manufacturers, there are probably a greater number of loudspeakers manufacturers! Speakers come in all type, shapes, material, technologies and prices. Unless you already are knowledgeable about speakers, and speakers technology, or unless you already own quality speakers, you may consider our recommendation for a proper selection of speakers. Speakers: types and sensitivity The tecon audio amplifiers are compact and single-ended topology. The output power, determined by the topology and the type of output tubes, is of the order of 5 to 8 watts per channel. What does this mean in terms of choosing appropriate loudspeakers? The perceived loudness of music [sound] by the human ear is not a linear function of the electronic power delivered by an amplifier. It is a result of sound pressure on the eardrum, and it happens that the relationship between loudness and sound pressure [electric power] is a logarithmic one. What it means is that to increase the loudness sensation to feel a sound level "twice as loud", a lot more than double the electric power is needed. The traditional measure of loudness is established in a decibel scale [dB SPL (Sound Pressure Level)]. Loud reproduction can be around 100 dB, live performance can reach 120 dB. A typical home listening level may be at a 86 db to 95 dB level or more. Of importance however is to have the system capable of delivering the wide dynamic range of sound loudness of the performance, to reproduce the musical expression with fidelity. Loudspeakers are rated by their sensitivity, for instance 89 dB/watts at 1m. That means this speaker delivers 89 dB when powered from 1 watt when listening at 1 meter. Each doubling of the electric power [watts] will increase the dB level by 3 units. Thus, 2 watts would result in 92 dB on these speakers. The type of speaker is one of the major factor in the resulting sensitivity. Horn loaded speakers for instance can have sensitivity factors exceeding 100 dB/w/meter! Our Model "55" [compact "55"] is rated about 5 watts per channel, that means it can deliver sound level at a dB value [average] by approx. 7 units higher than the sensitivity of the speaker. If you want a performance to reach 100 dB [at 1 m distant from the speakers], you will have to select speakers rated 93 dB/W at 1m. Of course, these are average, and the transients peaks can reach levels in excess of 100 dB even with a speaker rated at 90 dB/w/m. [Note to the specialist: this obviously is only an overview of the situation and we assume here that the amplifier operates within the range of specified and acceptable distortion.] Tube amplifiers saturate slowly [contrary to transistorized amplifiers] so that more dB is obtained with limited distortion. The SE34i is rated 8 watts per channel, and thus can increase the dB by 8 to 9 dB units. Therefore, a speaker rated 90 dB will result in loudness of 98 dB [good enough to worry your neighbors!]. Again, a tube amp saturates slowly so that more dB is obtained with limited distortion [as you guitars players out there know so well!!]. Many speakers are available with sensitivity between 89 dB and 93 dB/W/M and have proved wonderful with our amps. Some horns speakers have even higher sensitivity [95 to 103 dB/W/m!]. Of course, the size of the room is critical: a lot more power is needed to "fill-up" a large room with big sound. Our amps are best utilized in standard sized room, and with near or close field listening. Our recommendation: test, listen, and decide what you like! Some of
the speakers that have successfully be tested with the mini "55" and the
SE34i are: Klipsch, AER, B & W, Harbeth, ALI, ORGUE, Monitor Audio.
Pristine: pure, unspoiled, completely devoid of contamination, uncorrupted, unaltered. Soundscapes: acoustic environment, environment created by sound.
